Mont St-Michel

Mont St-Michel was probably the most interesting nights of my trip. We arrived on the Mont as all of the tourists were leaving, and man there was a lot of crowds. Most people don't get to stay on the Mont for the night, so we definitely got some confused looks when people saw us bringing our overnight bags with us. The hotels are in 3 different buildings, my room was in a different building than my parents which was a little nerve-wrecking but it was only 1 night.

We had dinner at one of the restaurants and our tour guide Linda's husband was able to join us for dinner - he is also a Rick Steves tour guide! Although I enjoyed my dinner, a lot of people in our group weren't too thrilled with the food. When dinner was finished, it was starting to get dark. I was on my way up to my parents room and I was walking behind a nun. All of a sudden, the nun turned a corner and she was gone. I thought I was going crazy or having an illusion, but I realized there was a very discrete door where she turned and must have gone inside. I thought I should just call it a night and go back to my room before anything else happened.

I felt an eire energy in the air, and I just wanted to crawl into bed and wait for the sun to come up. I'm not sure if it was the fact that I was sleeping 20 feet away from a graveyard, or my wild imagination, but I felt like there was someone else in my room. The shower was very small, but when the bathroom lights were off it left a shadow that looked just like a person standing there. I finally calmed myself down, and just as I was getting sleepy, I felt myself starting to sink into the bed. I thought to myself "yup, this is it. I knew I had a weird feeling and now I'm being sucked into the bed like quick sand and this is how it ends." Luckily, it was just the mattress - they put two twin beds together to make a king bed, and I managed to push them back together and just sleep on one side of the bed. This happened around midnight, and I was now wide awake, and totally spooked.

I finally fell asleep around 1:30 AM, and promptly at 5:00 AM, the restaurants started getting their food deliveries. Since the walkways are cobblestone, I heard every single bump the wheels made on the delivery carts until 6:30 AM. A few hours later, I woke up and walked around the island, taking in the views and watching the crowds start to form. As beautiful as the views and buildings were, the only way I would sleep on the Mont again is if I stayed in a room with someone, and had lots of sage.
